Talk with Nataliya Nechayeva-Yuriychuk lecturer in Czernichowce Univerity:
Maciej Milczanowski (MM) – Hello Nataliya, what were Your thinking when Russians concentrated on the Ukrainian borders but said they will not enter and withdraw, when at the same time USA were warning in the most serious tones that war is imminent. Did You believe that war will start?
Nataliya Nechayeva-Yuriychuk (NY): To be honest, in January I believed that the total war is impossible in XXI century. I knew that the situation is more than complicated but I thought that Russian President is using it for the additional pressure on Ukraine and Western World for promotion his interests in the world, including North Stream-2 and strengthening position of the RF on international scene. But the steps of Russian authorities in the middle of February demonstrated that the situation is similar as before the World War II, with some new circumstances, of course. Russian troops were concentrated along the Ukrainian border. The idea of Anschluss was realized in 2014 in Crimea. And the recognition of separatists enclaves in Donetsk and Luhansk was the demonstration of the seriousness of intentions to invade Ukraine. I was afraid of such scenario as the woman and mother, but I was thinking about its’ possibility and realism as the historian and political scientist.
MM – In our discussion in Poland You have said that president Zelensky has very poor opinion in Ukraine, many believe he is too much connected to Russian leaders. Don’t You think that it could be echo of Yanukowicz presidency and his ending – that Ukrainians really didn’t trust all politicians?
NY: Zelensky had a strong support from a part of Ukrainian electorate during President Elections. But after that his support became to decline. He has been started a number of initiatives, but his electorate was waiting for miracle. Other divided into strong opposition and more or less neutral. It’s a pity, but we have a complicated experience of political behavior of our presidents. And problem is not only in Yanukovich. The trust to president here is starting to decline soon after elections. This heritage is not only of Yanukovich regime. The lack of trust to politicians was formed in Soviet times. And the experience of Ukrainian presidents’ activity didn’t change the situation for better. But to be honest, Yanukovich was the example of the worst possible president we ever had. As for me, that is the first example of changing the attitude to the President during his Presidency. Zelensky is the first President of Ukraine whose behavior in crises can be the example for others. And he is the first who changed the vision of himself during the Presidency: from distrust to acceptance and respect.
MM: Now Zełensky is a real hero and nobody can deny that, what they say about him in Ukrainian TV?
NY: Zelensky behaves in accordance with the ideas of Ukrainians about the national leader: he is with people. He is in Kyiv under the Russian bombs, as Ukrainian citizens and guests of our capital. He defends our state as native home. He deserves respect and absolute support because he expresses the feelings and aspirations of Ukrainian people
MM: How Poland and west is presented in Ukrainian TV during the war?
NY: To be honest, I have no regular TV at home. I’m an internet user. And we feel great support from Poland. In internet space there is a great number of information about the support of Poland to Ukraine, Ukrainian people. And we feel great appreciation to Poland for that. Together we are much stronger.
MM: Is there any signs of Romanian support in the town where You live?
NY: Yes, of course. Romania opened borders for Ukrainians who had to leave their homes because of war. They organized a huge humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Ukrainians. The partnership between our city and Romanian ones was strengthen and we are getting strong support from Romania here.
MM: You live in Czerniowce in southern Ukraine, close to Romanian border, south east from Poland and north-west from Moldowa. It makes your town is not the aim of the first days of Russian aggression, but the war is influencing all Ukraine and neighboring countries as well as the whole world. Moreover Russians are targeting multiple cities to show their strength. Tell me please do You know what Ukrainians prepared in case of Russians entering the city?
NY: That is really difficult question. The war is influencing all of us. Right now we have huge number of refugees in Chernivtsi. We are trying to organize additional space for all who need support and help. People who are arriving in Chernivtsi can stay here. They are getting roof over their head, meal, water, clothes… Concerning Your last question, the answer is really simple: the same as all over Ukraine – resistance and struggle. You can see that Ukrainians all over the state demonstrate the total resistance to the enemy, to the Russian aggression. That’s the only way to the freedom of not only Ukraine, but Europe and world. Putin’s regime has to be destroyed. Otherwise it will destroy the democratic world.
Thank You, I am not an journalist so my question can be not the sort of most journalists would ask. Thank You we are all with all our hearts with the Ukrainian People!
